Futebol de Salão is what our BSS football training is based upon. Here, we will delve into what Futebol de Salão actually is.

Futebol de Salão is the Brazilian version of futsal. The term “futsal” originates from the Portuguese “futebol de salão” and from the Spanish “fútbol sala” or “fútbol de salón”. They are all translatable as “indoor football”.

Futebol de Salão is a variant of association football played between two teams of five players.  It is played on a pitch that is the size of a basketball court with a smaller, size 2 football which is heavier (465g) and has virtually no bounce (10%).

The History Of Futebol de Salão

The origins of Futebol de Salão, also known as futsal, come from 1930s Uruguay by a teacher named Juan Carlos Ceriani.

The game was originally played on a basketball court and, when writing the rules, Ceriani took many of them from a variety of different games. The 5 a side teams and 40 minute matches came from basketball, the pitch and goal dimensions came from handball and the goalkeeper rules came from water polo.

The game soon spread throughout South America and the rules were standardised. The first international confederation was formed in 1965. In 1989, FIFA took over as the sport’s governing body, holding the first edition of its World Cup that January in the Netherlands with Brazil beating the hosts in the final.

The first UEFA tournament came in 1996, won by hosts Spain, and there followed a full UEFA European Futsal Championship in 1999 where Russia was victorious.

In countries like Brazil, Argentina, Portugal and Spain, it is normal for young players to grow up playing futsal, and even those that switch to football credit their skills to the small-sided game. This includes football legends such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Philippe Coutinho.

Why Do We Use Futebol de Salão As The Basis For Our Training?

We use Futebol de Salão as the basis of our training because this 5 a side game, on a smaller pitch with a smaller, heavier ball, leads to a faster paced, tightly compressed and highly pressurised game. Playing this way means that the players get 600% more touches on the ball, helping them with core moves and skills.

As your child gets older and joins our 11+ football classes, we will introduce play techniques which includes playing 11 vs 11 but, due to the Futebol de Salão style of playing and training, they will be highly skilled players.

Many legends of the football world credit playing futsal as why they are so skilled. We have had many of these highly skilled players come through BSS training such Michah Richards, Abby Towers, Marlon Fossey and John Farnworth.

It is an insanely fast, tightly compressed and highly pressurized game of 5 a side football in which the core moves and skills within the syllabus can be trialled in a game environment.

We base our football training on because it leads to highly skilled players.
