Kids Football Classes For 6 Year Olds
At Brazilian Soccer School, our football classes for 6 year olds run 60-90 minutes long, with each session split into teaching individual technical skills, such as juggling, passing, dribbling, shooting etc.and small-sided Futebol de Salão game situations. Classes are held across the UK and the Channel Islands and children are given a soft introduction to our ICFDS Skills Badge Scheme.
What Will My 6 Year Old Learn At BSS?
At 6, children build on the ball-manipulation basics from BSS Minis and start developing a fuller skill set: juggling, passing, dribbling, and shooting, alongside an understanding of why warm-ups and cool-downs matter. The session split stays consistent with the wider BSS approach:
|
Session Focus |
% of Class Time |
What’s Covered |
|
Individual technical work |
60% |
Core ball skills, laying the foundation for later training |
|
FDS game situations |
40% |
Small-sided games applying those skills under pressure |
The goal at this age isn’t just skill acquisition, it’s building a solid core of technique that prepares your child for the next level of BSS training.
What Is the BSS Methodology?
BSS training rests on four principles:
- Emphasis on individual skills
- Futebol de Salão
- Increased time training with the ball
- Physical, mental & tactical training
This approach has produced professional footballers such as Micah Richards and Marlon Fossey, as well as football freestylers and Guinness World Record holders including Indi Cowie and John Farnworth.
How Do 6 Year Olds Earn ICFDS Skills Badges?
At 6 years old, your child will be given a soft introduction into our ICFDS Skills Badge Scheme.
This is a scheme designed to show the kids what is possible with the ball and that they should push back against any barriers in their minds that limit what they believe is possible.
With our 5-8 year olds, they will be introduced to the two preliminary levels – 1st Step and Kick Start.
What Is Futebol de Salão and Where Did It Come From?
Futebol de Salão is the Brazilian version of futsal, a variant of association football played five-a-side on a basketball court-sized pitch, with a smaller, heavier ball that has almost no bounce. Its fast, tightly compressed, high-pressure style of play produces roughly 600% more touches of the ball than a standard football match, which is why BSS uses it as the foundation of its training methodology.
It helps with the skills of development of players, including creating intelligent defenders, like Micah Richards, as, in futsal, the ball is easier to control so the defenders have to patient and clever.
“I used to train at Brazilian Soccer Schools two or three times a week. We used a small ball, which was supposed to improve technique and touch, and it was a good thing to do, especially being a defender, as the better you are on the ball the better it is for your game.”
– Micah Richards, www.icfds.com
Futsal itself was invented in Uruguay in the 1930s by Juan Carlos Ceriani, who borrowed rules from several other sports: five-a-side teams and 40-minute matches from basketball, pitch and goal dimensions from handball, and goalkeeper rules from water polo. The name “futsal” comes from the Portuguese futebol de salão and the Spanish fútbol sala – both translating to “indoor football.”
What Makes BSS Different From Other Football Classes?
Two things set BSS apart: the Futebol de Salão foundation, and the focus on the whole child. BSS classes for 6 year olds aren’t only about ball control and technique, they are also about respect, friendship, and teamwork, all of which are built into every session.
Research has shown that children who do sports from a young age are happier, more resilient, more trusting and go on to lead a more active life:
“Positive experiences at an early age help build the foundations for an active life. If children and young people have experiences that feel fun, positive and give them a sense of confidence, they’re more likely to want to be active in the future…Children who are more active are happier, more resilient and more trusting of others…”
– Positive experiences for children and young people, Sport England
At BSS, our aim is to develop well-rounded people as much as well-rounded players.
The Benefits of Kids Football Classes for 6 Year Olds
The biggest benefit at age six is the shift from learning skills to using them. Children begin applying the techniques they’ve built with genuine decision-making, composure and creativity in game situations. Within the same BSS Minis environment, a six year old typically gets more from each session as their understanding of the game grows.
| Benefit | What it develops at age 6 |
| Game intelligence | Futebol de Salão game situations teach children when and where to use a skill, developing decision-making rather than technique alone. |
| Concentration and focus | Following a structured session builds an attention span that transfers into the classroom and everyday life. |
| Composure under pressure | The tight, fast space of Futebol de Salão rewards staying calm and thinking clearly when closely marked. |
| Two-footed control | Building on their first-year basics, children refine their control and confidence on both feet. |
| Creativity and expression | With a growing skill set, children start to improvise and try things for themselves in tight-space play. |
| Motivation and goal-setting | Working towards the 1st Step and Kick Start badges gives children clear, achievable milestones to aim for. |
How Does Football at age 6 Differ from age 5?
Six year olds are in the same BSS Minis group as five year olds (our 5–8 bracket), but the focus naturally steps up. Where a five year old is building ball-manipulation basics for the first time, a six year old starts putting those basics to work – reading the space, making quicker decisions, and expressing themselves in game situations. It’s the same environment, but a child who has a year of foundation behind them takes progressively more from each session.
