Kids Football Classes For 5 Year Olds
From age 5, children join BSS Minis – the youngest group in our football programme. These classes last 60-90 minutes and we recommend your kid comes 1-3 times per week. We have BSS classes at locations across the UK and the Channel Islands. Training is based on Futebol de Salão, the original Brazilian version of futsal, and sessions are split into working on individual technical skill work and small-sided game situations.
What Age Group Are 5 Year Olds In?
Five year olds join BSS Minis, our foundational group for children aged 5-8. This is where children begin building the technical base through ball manipulation, individual skill work, and small-sided games.

What Is The ICFDS Skills Badge Scheme?
The ICFDS Skills Badge Scheme is a structured progression system designed to help children push past what they believe is possible with a football, working toward complete mastery of the ball through hard work and practice.
Five year olds are introduced to the scheme at its two preliminary levels: 1st Step and Kick Start.
What Is Futebol de Salão and Why Does BSS Use It?
Futebol de Salão is the original Brazilian variant of futsal which is played 5-a-side, on a basketball court-sized pitch, with a smaller, heavier ball that has virtually no bounce. Its fast pace and tight space produce roughly 600% more touches of the ball per player than a standard football match, which is one of the main reasons BSS uses it as the foundation of its coaching methodology.
We use it because there are many benefits to using Futebol de Salão in our training as playing indoors offers new learning objectives, helps the players development, including creating intelligent defenders.
“More challenges mean more development… Playing 5v5 in tight areas is hard full stop. And take the futsal rule that the ball must not be passed straight back to the goalkeeper after it’s been distributed. Immediately, this creates an underloaded situation of 4v5 in favour of the defending team. The players in possession must now deal with receiving and keeping the ball under pressure.”
– Benefits of playing futsal for young players, England Football Learning
Futsal has also been the starting point for many players who have gone on to be some of the best and most successful players in the world, including Cristiano Ronaldo:
“During my childhood in Portugal, all we played was futsal. The small playing area helped me improve my close control, and whenever I played futsal I felt free. If it wasn’t for futsal, I wouldn’t be the player I am today.”

Why Start Football at Age 5?
If your child hasn’t been to a football class before, age five is still a good time to begin because, at this age, children are naturally building their fundamental movement skills, and technique learned now becomes second nature later. The ICFDS Skills Badge Scheme gives even the youngest players tangible goals, turning practice into a sense of achievement rather than pressure. The result is a foundation built on enjoyment which is the single biggest predictor of whether a child sticks with a sport.
